Under The Radar12/3/02

by Mike Shingle, Guest Writer

Note: At the time of this writing, the author holds an eTopps portfolio with a position in Buehrle cards. Make your own investment decisions.

2001 Warrick Dunn

He has showed some success coming from Tampa Bay at one of Atlanta’s half back slots. Between Warrick Dunn, and T.J Duckett, Atlanta’s running game has improved greatly since last season. Warrick is a huge asset to this Atlanta football team. So far in 2002 Warrick has 613 yards and 8 TDs. This may be Warrick Dunn’s only eTopps issue as rookie RB T.J Duckett shows much promise. With only 571 produced, Warrick Dunn’s 2001 issue is a steal and can be picked up between $10 - $12.

2002 T.J. Duckett

Rookie T.J Duckett and his teammate Warrick Dunn share the role at the half back slot in Atlanta. So far this season T.J has 414 yards with 4 TDs. He is second in rookie rushing this season, being only behind of Clinton Portis of Denver. With rising star Michael Vick, T.J may be the answer Atlanta is looking for in order for a future Super Bowl appearance. Considering his potential for future eTopps card holders, I hold this card in high regard. His card has an issue of 6,000 and you can pick one up on eBay for a mere $5.

2002 Mark Buehrle

Mark is a great young pitcher with a lot of talent. This guy knows how to pitch! There is a huge amount of potential in this guy. With a solid defense behind him, he can be a 20 win pitcher by the time he is 24. With the right clubhouse, he is a future MVP candidate. Although only 3,000 of his cards were produced, Mark Buehrle’s 2002 issue can still be bought for under $7.

2001 Grant Hill

Grant Hill is a very talented athlete who showed a lot of heart overcoming a career threatening ankle injury. In his return this year with the Magic, he has lead his team in field goal percentage, and is second in scoring only to T-Mac. With only 542 cards in existence, his 2001 issue can be picked up for under $20.

2001 Eric Munson

If this young man can hold up his offensive numbers in the pros as he has in AAA, he will be a force to reckon with in years to come. Eric has the tenacity and strength of a major leaguer. This year should be his first test. With a large 5,000 cards issued, this card is one of the least expensive 2001 issues and can be purchased for about $4. A small price to pay for arguably huge gains with future success.

2002 Joe Mays

This guy is my sleeper pick. He is considered one of the AL’s best young starters after dazzling with 17 wins and a 3.16 ERA in 2001. Although Joe landed on the disabled list at the beginning of his 2002 campaign, he is still capable of a 20 win season in 2003. His team has showed a strong defense and a suprisingly potent offense in the 2002 post season. He may be the number one starter this season in Minnesota. Only time will tell for this youngster. With 3,000 issued, Joe’s 2002 card is a steal at around $4.
