Collector Profile10/8/02

by Sean Perri

"Gomaz" is a 30-year old eTopps enthusiast and chartered accountant/entrepreneur originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He now resides in Calgary, Alberta.

Q: How did you come up with your handle?

A: It's a nickname that goes back to like 5th Grade.

Q: When did you start collecting "regular" sports cards? Do you still?

A: 1980, the year Gretzky's rookie card came out. Still do, will never stop.

Q: Who is your favorite player? Why?

A: Teemu Selanne. Because I was at every home game for his first 3 seasons in the league. I had front row ice level seats and was right there when he broke all the rookie season records.

Q: Who is your favorite team? Why?

A: Was the Winnipeg Jets while they were around. Now I like the Flames cuz I live in Calgary and the Sharks for Teemu.

Q: How big is your portfolio? (sounds kinky... lol)

A: My port is 470 cards.

Q: Do you consider yourself to be a trader/investor/collector or some combination?

A: Collector by nature, investor by default.

Q: When did you join eTopps?

A: The day the very first Baseball IPO was released.

Q: How did you hear about eTopps?

A: Trade mags.

Q: What were your smartest IPO and aftermarket card buys?

A: I bought a minimum of 2 of each hockey at IPO and up to 10 of some. Aftermarket, hmm, I bought a complete basketball set for under $1,000.

Q: Which eTopps buys do you wish you could do over?

A: All the 2001 football. And I would have bought even more hockey.

Q: Where do you see eTopps years from now?

A: Because Topps is excited about this program, I see it lasting for a long time. In two years I see them improving the site and tweaking it to perfection. In five years I see more and more people joining as a convenient way to collect sports cards. In ten years, it could be the biggest thing in sports memorabilia.

Q: What is your favorite eTopps card?

A: Martin Havlat 2001.

Q: Which eTopps card would you recommend as a solid "investment"?

A: Forsberg (can't lose, trust me).

Q: How would you change the eTopps program, if at all?

A: A card transfer mechanism outside of eBay.

Q: Why do you collect eTopps cards?

A: I collect things that are very cool and eTopps is very cool

Q: Do you have any words to live by... not only for eTopps, but for the real world as well?

A: HOCKEY RULES!!
