IPO InsightFargas, D. Jackson, Bryant Johnson, Teyo Johnson,
D. Mason, McNabb, Moss, Toomer

By Duncan Runyon, Guest Writer (e-mail)

This week's IPO's consist of 6 wide receivers, 1 quarterback, and 1 running back. A very offensive list, to say the least. Anyway, here is my insight into this weeks IPO's.

Randy Moss (2,000 @ $6.50)Randy Moss 2003 eTopps

Moss is off to another great start this year with 29 receptions and 6 touchdowns. What can you say about this 6-year veteran out of Marshall other than he is one of the best receivers you will ever see, and has more records than any player his age should have. However, this will be the 4th card of Randy Moss issued by eTopps! That's right, the 4th card. Moss has been included in every single football set eTopps has issued. Even though he is probably the best receiver in the NFL today, how can I recommend this card? Get it on eBay if you must.

Bryant Johnson (2,500 @ $6.50)Bryant Johnson 2003 eTopps

Bryant Johnson is a rookie wide receiver out of Penn State. He has begun the season with the Arizona Cardinals by playing well and grabbing 18 receptions in his first 5 games. Even though this is his rookie card and 1st eTopps issue, don't buy this card. Get it on eBay.

Amani Toomer (1,500 @ $4.00)Amani Toomer 2003 eTopps

Amani Toomer is a wide receiver for the New York Giants drafted out of Michigan in the 2nd round in 1996. He is becoming one of the best and most productive receivers in Giants franchise history. His size and speed enable him to be a true "big play" receiver. This is his 2nd eTopps card. His first was his 2001 issue with a PR of 538 and a SDA of $15.88. With this said, I believe Toomer is an above-average receiver with an impressive career, but unless you are a big Giants fan, don't buy this card! Get it on eBay.

Derrick Mason (1,500 @ $6.50)Derrick Mason 2003 eTopps

Derrick Mason is a 7-year veteran out of Michigan State. He is a "big play" receiver and an accomplished return man. Mason has been a consistent offensive force for the Tennessee Titans. In 2000 Mason was a big part of the Titans run to the Super Bowl which, as you may recall, ended in a loss to the St Louis Rams in one of the more competitive Super Bowls played. Mason has one other eTopps card, a 2001 issue with a PR of 207 and a SDA of $93.10. This card is a good lower-cost alternative. For Mason and Titan fans, buy this card! All others get it on eBay.

Darrell Jackson (1,000 @ $4.00)Darrell Jackson 2003 eTopps

Darrell Jackson is a 4th-year wide receiver out of Florida playing for the Seattle Seahawks. He looks to be a consistent 60+ catch-a-year guy. Unless you are a Seattle fan you have probably never heard of this player. Even with Seattle QB Matt Hasselback developing into a decent passer, Jackson doesn't appear to be a budding superstar. I'm not sure why anyone would pick this one up at IPO even with the $4.00 price tag. Don't check that IPO box. Get him on eBay.

Justin Fargas (2,000 @ $4.00)Justin Fargas 2003 eTopps

Who the "farg" is this guy? OK. Justin Fargas is a rookie running back out of USC. The Oakland Raiders are going to use him as a return man and and he will probably get minimal snaps as a runner. My recommendation here is, "what the farg" - he's only 4 bucks. But my guess is as good as yours is... let's get him on eBay.

Donovan McNabb (2,000 @ $4.00)Donovan McNabb 2003 eTopps

Contrary to Rush Limbaugh's opinion that Donovan McNabb is overrated, I believe he is one of the best "modern day" quarterbacks in the league. McNabb has all the tools to be great. This is his 5th year out of Syracuse and he may now have the maturity to lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Anyways, I'm sure all you Eagles fans hope so! Donovan McNabb has 2 other eTopps issues, a 2001 card with a PR of 987 and a 2002 with a PR of 5,000. This year's card may have the shortest PR of the bunch. With that in mind, buy this card!

Teyo Johnson (2,000 @ $4.00)Teyo Johnson 2003 eTopps

Teyo Johnson is a rookie tight end out of Stanford. He was drafted by the old man (oops - I mean Oakland Raiders) and has started the NFL season off slowly with just 2 receptions. Can anyone guess what my recommendation is on this one? I know conventional wisdom says "buy rookies at IPO" but don't even think about buying this one! Get it on eBay and only if you are a set builder.
