IPO InsightBrunell, T. Carter, Couch, George, D. Jackson, Stallworth

By Sean Perri

Welcome to Week 5 of the NFL! It's been a fun couple of weeks of football and we're moving into the second quarter of the season now.

At this point in the season, teams have taken on a persona, a reputation, an attitude and some, a stench. For example, the where is the bottom for teams like the Bengals, Vikings and even the Jets and Rams who both had high hopes entering this season. Other teams have surprised football fans such as the Chargers, Panthers and the Saints who seem to have regained their form from the 2000 season.

The bottom line is football, unlike our supposed national pastime, has a little thing known as "parity". Parity is what makes football exciting. The fact that the Texans, an expansion team can be competitive in their first season is great. A better example would probably be the Lions. Here's a team that looked like they couldn't beat the worst XFL squad and they go and handle the Saints last week like Tony Siragusa handles a plate of wings on an empty stomach. Any team can beat any team…anytime.

I love football.

It's also week five for the eTopps football IPO's and here's what we have:

Eddie George (5,000 @ $9.50)

The running back out of Ohio State has rarely missed a game in his NFL career. In fact, he has missed as many NFL games as I have played…NONE! Despite that remarkable statistic (for George, not me), George is hurting and his numbers are suffering. I hate to jump the gun, but could George's best days be behind him? I would have to think so. Everyone knows that this was supposed to be a big year for him, a year in which he was supposed to show that he has overcome last year's bangs and bruises. However, George looks like a man who has been hit many, many times. He looks like a guy who has never missed a game since his pro career began in 1996. At $9.50, I will be passing on the guy who turned me on to the Buckeyes.

Darrell Jackson (4,000 @ $6.50)

D-Jax is a solid receiver from Florida who is entering that magical third year. The guy is like night and day depending on who is throwing the ball to him. When Hasself#@$! is taking the snaps, Jackson's face can be found on milk cartons at your local grocer. However, when the under-appreciated Trent Dilfer is at the helm, Jackson looks like the solid receiver I believe he is. This is his second etopps issuing and at an issue of 4,000 it may be a solid buy.

Donte' Stallworth (5,000 @ $6.50)

Star rookie wide receivers are hard to come by, but fantasy football fans know this guy is the real deal. With four scores in as many games, Stallworth looks to be ripe. He definitely talks the talk, but when you can back it up like Donte', your actions speak much louder. At an issue of 5K, I have to think this is the cream of this week's crop. Stallworth should be a star for many years.

Mark Brunell (4,000 @ $4.00)

Brunell is one of the most consistent, tough quarterbacks in the game. He's not the guy I would build my franchise around, but he's definitely a guy who plays to win. I guess it doesn't hurt to have had Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell to throw to for the past few years. Brunell could be the Bret Boone of the 2k2 football IPO's, being that he is a somewhat popular, average player who had a cheap IPO at $4.00.

Tim Carter (3,000 @ $6.50)

Can you say "long-term investment"? This guy seems to have the speed and talent to be a solid NFL receiver, but he is certainly a few years away from making an impact. With the sub-par career performance of Ike Hilliard, I am sure Carter is just what the Giants need to forget that they drafted Hilliard three rounds ahead of Derrick Mason.

Tim Couch (6,000 @ $6.50)

High issue. Not-so-great quarterback. I'll pass (no pun intended).

See ya next week! Good luck!
