Lefty Grove (2,000 @ $12.50)
This week I get to write about a Hall of Fame pitcher from 74 years ago who nobody knows. Instead, I could be writing about Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg or any Cubs player for that matter. I would even settle for someone from the south side (I'd love to see a Minnie Minoso), but alas back to reality. Lefty played for the Philadelphia Athletics (at least eTopps got his team right - I can't believe wouldn't correct the Gibson error) and won an impressive 300 games in his career. He won a career-best 31 games in 1931. He put up some impressive stats but even I, someone who until now thought he knew baseball, have never heard of him. This is an awful selection for the Classics set and should sell below IPO.
Willie McCovey (2,000 @ $12.50)
McCovey may very well be one of the top three first basemen to ever play the game of baseball. He was the original "Big Mac" way before McGwire graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. He ended his career with 521 home runs and 1,555 RBI, both impressive feats. I will buy one of these for the simple fact that he is worthy of a Classic IPO and he has been honored by the Giants when they named the water beyond the right field wall "McCovey cove". I sure am glad that eTopps fixed the reverse negative and didn't tarnish the memory of another great Hall of Famer, as they did with Josh Gibson.
