IPO InsightClassics: Aparicio, Mathewson

By Sean Cook (e-mail)

Christy Mathewson (4,000 @ $12.50)

Christy pitched for the N.Y. Giants and Cincinnati Reds. On the mound, this fierce competitor was the most dominating pitcher of his era (and of any era, some claim). During his illustrious 17-year career, he led the league in wins four times, won five strikeout titles, won 30 or more games four times (including 20 or more wins for 12 straight years), pitched four shutouts and ten complete games in World Series competition, and won 373 regular-season games. In 1936, he joined Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson as the first class of baseball's Hall of Fame. He had a career winning percentage of .665, which is sixth-best of all-time. His career ERA was 2.13, which is fifth-best of all-time. We could go on and on about his accomplishments and how he dominated baseball during the early 1900's. No doubt about it -- he is one of the best to ever take the mound. This righty deserves a place in your collection. I doubt this card will sell out. Most likely it will sell anywhere from 1,200 - 1,600 cards and rise about 10 - 15% after IPO. Don't wait until after IPO to get this card. BUY THIS CARD.

Luis Aparicio (4,000 @ $12.50)

Aparicio played shortstop for the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox. Luis was the most dominant shortstop in the American League during his time. Luis was an acrobatic, graceful shortstop with exceptional range and hands. He holds the all-time record for most games played at short (2,581) and the American League mark for career assists (8,016), chances (12,564) and putouts (4,548). Aparicio also resurrected the stolen base as an offensive weapon, stealing over 50 bases three straight seasons and leading the league in thefts nine consecutive times. With Luis signing at the FanFest in Chicago this week demand for the card may get inflated. This card will not sell out and not match the other cards in the set. DONT BUY THIS CARD.
