IPO InsightClassics: Brock, Gehrig

By Jeff West (e-mail)

Lou Brock (4,000 @ $12.50)

Brock was one of the best base stealers ever to play the game of baseball. The guy was simply amazing in his 19 MLB seasons. He stole a total of 938 bases in his career including a spectacular 118 in 1974. I have to admit that what the whole classics set has going for it is the beauty of the cards in general and this card is no exception. Brock was a lifetime .293 hitter and ended his career with 149 home runs. He definitely deserves a Classic card in his remembrance but I hope he is ready to take a decrease in value because I can't see anyone paying more than $12.50 for this card when they can have Mays at about $9. Bottom line: do not buy this at IPO.

Lou Gehrig (4,000 @ $12.50)

The "Iron Horse" is back but this time it's only for his eTopps Classic IPO. If only he knew that he were soon to join the under-IPO club he would turn over in his grave. Gehrig has a remarkable career, playing in 2,130 consecutive games and finishing with 493 home runs, 1995 RBI's, and a .340 average. I obviously never had the privilege of watching this great ball player with him debuting in June 15, 1923 and playing his last game in 1939 (when he played just 8 games). Gehrig died on June 2, 1941 in Riverdale, NY from what is now called Lou Gehrig's disease. With all that I have told you about this great American he still will not hold IPO. Get it on eBay for your set.

The Classics have a real problem on their hands with the upcoming IPO's. Since eTopps left the print runs and the prices the same and due to the poor performance of last year's Classics they will probably not sell out and create a new SP every couple weeks. In my opinion, the early Classics will suffer greatly. The football Classics are primarily driven by SP's as well as by our friend JHarla and his massive Montana hoard keeping that card afloat. The baseball Classics were more of a popularity-driven set with the most popular old-timers being worth the most. Well, now we are going to see a mix of the two. My problem is simply why would you pay $12.50 or more for Brock when you can have Mays, Ryan, and many others that were better for less money? This is going to be something that holds all of the baseball Classics back from any potential gains.
