The last week of Classic Baseball
for year one is upon us. Etopps has decided to end the first year of the
Classics Program with Ty Cobb and Whitey Ford. Here’s a little background information on them:
Edward “Whitey” Ford played for the
New York Yankees in the ’50-’60. Whitey Ford was able to win 236 games in his
career, while losing only 106. With a win percentage of .690 Whitey holds the
best winning percentage of any 20th century pitcher. He led the AL
for most victories on three occasions, the lowest ERA and number of shutouts
twice. To go along with those amazing statistics for regular season ball are his
very impressive World Series achievements. Ford holds many World Series records
for notching 10 wins and acuminating 94 strikeouts.
Ty Cobb is our other Classic
selection. Playing 24 great seasons (mostly with the Tigers) Cobb was able to
produce monstrous numbers including 1,938 base knocks (RBIs), scoring 2,246
times and accumulating 4,189 hits (295 triples). With a lifetime batting average
of .366, Cobb was able to earn 12 batting titles, and the Triple Crown in 1909.
Most of the Classics have been dipping
as of late and dropping below IPO Price except for a few (Ruth, Ryan etc…). I
would assume that someone of Cobb’s stature would be one of the those that would
have a high demand right from the start. Ford on the other hand might not be too
good of a pick up at IPO Price. I would try and get $12.50 worth of change lying
around the house and use it to pick up a Ty Cobb. As for Ford, watch for his
price in the first few weeks, you might be able to get him cheaper than IPO.
Cobb: Medium-High Rotation (1 @ IPO)
Ford: Medium Rotation (Try and pick on up @ below IPO)
